讲座简介:From Thoreau to Bill McKibben: The Influence of Environmental Writing in America

This talk traces the impact of environmental writing in America, starting with Henry David Thoreau, then proceeding to John Muir, Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson, Wendell Berry, Terry Tempest Williams and Bill McKibben. Environmental writers protest many ills in American society, including excessive consumerism and environmental destruction, but they also see in attitudes hostile toward nature beliefs that contribute to nationalism, racism, sexism, and loss of spiritual connection. The desire to control nature ultimately leads to estrangement from it and from all life, including the self.

She has degrees from Michigan State University, Duke University, and the University of California at Davis, where she completed a Ph.D. in English and wrote a dissertation about four American women nature writers in the twentieth century: Mary Austin, Sally Carrighar, Rachel Carson, and Terry Tempest Williams.
