讲座简介:
Ralph Waldo Emerson called for an American literary nationalism in which Americans would write about their own unique experiences rather than mimic the works of Europeans or other foreign countries. He also called for a reform of ethics from hierarchical and class based systems toward a sympathy with natural and democratic world of the new American west.
In 1939, John Ford convinced a movie studio to make a great movie in what was previously a low budget and poorly esteemed genre ——the Western. Ford’s Stagecoach became a classic and inaugurated the Western Film as a mainstream genre in the 20th Century.
We will explore both of these ideas – American Literary Nationalism and a Frontier Ethic – as well as screen the film for an evening of viewing and discussion.
